The president and Minister of Tourism of the Cabildo de Lanzarote, María Dolores Corujo, held the last meetings this week to present the details of the 2021 Tourism Sustainability Plan 'Lanzarote, energy of the land', in this case to the municipalities that had yet to learn about the plan in detail, the municipalities of Yaiza, Arrecife, Haría and Teguise.

This Tourism Sustainability Plan is the only project in the Canary Islands, among 22 submitted, chosen by the Secretary of State for Tourism to promote ecological transition, digital transformation and business competitiveness in tourist destinations. The plan will have an allocation of 4,950,000 euros, financed in equal parts with 1.65 million euros from the Secretary of State for Tourism, the Ministry of Tourism and Commerce of the Government of the Canary Islands and the Cabildo de Lanzarote.

Corujo explained that this plan marks the "path we must follow to achieve a sustainable destination. The allocation of almost five million euros is now available, which will allow us to make a reality of an initiative aimed at resizing our complementary offer, that is, SMEs, restaurants, small and medium-sized businesses, as well as complementary leisure activities."

The Program of Tourism Sustainability Plans in Destinations seeks to improve tourist destinations by investing in actions that improve their competitiveness, attract tourists and boost the private sector. It also aims to effectively incorporate sustainability and digitization into the management of resources, infrastructure and tourism products of destinations. Another objective is to diversify the tourism offer, contributing to generate employment and activity opportunities, distributing the benefits of tourism activity and promoting territorial cohesion and the deconcentration of demand, also diverting it to rural areas.

The Sustainability Plans contribute to improving the natural capital of the tourism system, guaranteeing its preservation through the reduction of emissions of polluting gases and with a more efficient management of waste and water consumption, protecting and restoring ecosystems and mitigating the effects of climate change.
