Canarians spent a total of 1,179 million euros on tourist trips in 2021, of which more than half, 628 million, were on trips between the islands, according to data provided last Tuesday by the Ministry of Tourism of the Canary Islands Government, which include trips for study, which totaled 16 million euros.
Canarian residents generated an expenditure of 358 million euros on traveling to the peninsula and 193 million abroad. Likewise, according to the data provided, the expenditure made on tourist trips within the islands was higher on weekends, 188 million euros, than on summer vacations, when the figure was 174.
At Christmas, Canarians spent 20 million last year on tourist trips within the archipelago, almost double that of Easter, a period in which they invested 11 million euros in tourist trips, although bridge trips concentrated a higher expenditure, 29 million euros.
Of the Spanish territory, the most appreciated community by the islanders was Madrid, where the disbursement was 112 million euros, followed by Galicia and Andalusia, with 42 and 40 million euros, respectively. Castilla-La Mancha, with an expenditure of 38 million, Catalonia, with 28, and Asturias, with 24 million, were also, in that order, destinations chosen by Canarians last year.
The communities where residents of the islands did the least tourism were Valencia, with an expenditure of three million euros, and Cantabria and Navarra, which was four million in each, according to the note provided by the Ministry, which has obtained the data from the National Institute of Statistics.
