The number of vacation homes in Spain increased by 35,000 units in the last year alone to 321,496, according to the National Institute of Statistics. In the Canary Islands archipelago there are 42,651, of which 7,226 are located in Lanzarote and represent 32% of tourism on the island.

Most belong to families who thus obtain an extra income and participate in the economic benefits of tourism, but the number of blocks of apartments of large tourist companies that are promoted as vacation homes and that impact the price of long-term rentals is increasing. There have also been complaints about homes that operate without a license or without meeting quality standards.

Consequently, there are more and more voices that believe that the Government of the Canary Islands should give more powers to the town councils so that they can carry out closer surveillance. Andalusia has just modified the decree that regulates this type of housing in that sense.
