The Canary Islands Institute of Agri-Food Quality (ICCA) has published the resolution announcing the Official Agrocanarias Wine Competition 2025 aimed at recognizing the best wine productions with Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) produced and bottled in the archipelago.

The event, which will be held in Fuerteventura from May 27 to 28, 2025, and in Tenerife on June 3, has twelve different categories according to the type of grape and the method of production.

As explained by the director of the ICCA, the objective is to grant "a quality distinction to all the awarded wines, offering wineries support in the commercialization of their differentiated quality productions in the face of an increasingly demanding consumer in a global market."

The deadline for submitting applications will conclude on May 5, 2025. To access the registration application and obtain additional information, you can access the electronic headquarters of the Canary Islands Government.

The competition is open to young dry white wines and barrel-fermented white wines, young red wines and barrel-aged red wines, semi-dry wines, semi-sweet wines, sweet wines, sweet Malvasia wines, dry rosé wines, liqueur wines, tea wines, sparkling wines, aged wines, and reserve wines.

Requirements to participate

The submitted productions must correspond to qualified batches and commercial brands available on the market, and comply with the legislation and regulations in force in the sector. In addition, a part of them must be available for commercialization at the time of registration.

On the other hand, all wines must correspond to the 2023 or 2024 harvest, with the exception of aged wines, reserve wines, tea wines, sweet wines, liqueur wines, sparkling wines, and sweet Malvasia wines.

Within each type and brand, different wines may be submitted, as long as the labeling indicates the differences in production. The sample submitted must come from a homogeneous batch, whose stocks in the winery at the time of registration must meet the requirements established in the competition rules according to the quantity.

The competition will be governed by a blind tasting system, where the tasting panel, made up of about twenty tasters, specialists in the analysis of agri-food products, will evaluate the samples without knowing their origin, awarding with their valuations the Grand Gold Medals, Gold Medals and Silver Medals, and the special distinctions of Best Wine of the Canary Islands, Best Wine chosen by the oenologists of the Canary Islands, Best Image and Presentation, and Best Organic Wine of the Canary Islands 2025.

The preliminary phase of the competition will be held on May 27 and the final on May 28, in Fuerteventura, while the oenologists' tasting will be held on June 3 in Tenerife.

Benefits for participants and for the winner

The product chosen as Best Wine of the Canary Islands 2025 will be the subject of a report that will be published on the website of the autonomous body and sent to various general and specialized media in agricultural information and gastronomy, for dissemination.

In addition, the distinguished productions may use the official badge of the prize received for one year and participate in the various promotion and promotion events that the ICCA organizes throughout the year.

Finally, the ICCA will cover the registration and logistics costs corresponding to participation in the annual CERVIM competition (Center for Research, Studies, Protection, Coordination and Valorization of Mountain Viticulture) of those wineries that have been admitted to the Agrocanarias Competition.

Likewise, they will be entitled to the payment of the logistics costs corresponding to participation in the national wine competition that is determined in the Wine and Vine Council.
