In Canarias, 52,800 net jobs were created in 2022, thanks to which its list of unemployed people was reduced by 50,100 people compared to the figures it presented as of December 31, 2021. The unemployment rate in the archipelago fell to 14.57%, the lowest since December 2007.
According to the Active Population Survey (EPA) of the last quarter published this Thursday by the National Institute of Statistics (INE), the islands currently have 169,000 unemployed and an unemployment rate that exceeds the national average by 1.7 points.
The EPA data shows that unemployment fell in the islands almost ten times more than in the whole of Spain (22.86% compared to 2.57%) and that almost one in five jobs created in the country was generated by the Canary Islands (52,800 of the total increase of 278,900 employed).
Only in the last quarter, the number of employed people in the Canary Islands economy grew by 43,100 workers compared to the data from September, 4.55%, when in the rest of the country 81,900 net jobs were destroyed (-0.40%)
In addition, the islands scored the largest quarterly drop in unemployment, an indicator that decreased by 35,200 people, which placed the rate at 14.57% of the active population, the third highest in the country, after those of Andalusia (19.00%) and Extremadura (17.62%).
Canarias started 2022 with an unemployment rate of 20.30% and has finished it with almost six points less, 14.57%.
