The number of unemployed registered in the public employment offices of the Canary Islands decreased by 2,022 people at the end of February compared to January, 0.98%, bringing the total to 205,134 unemployed, after the signing of 55,148 contracts, 27% of them permanent.
The decrease in unemployment in the islands exceeded the one registered in Spain as a whole (-0.38%) by six tenths and the signing of permanent contracts has tripled compared to a year ago. In fact, the Canary Islands is one of the communities with the highest percentage of contracts of this type in February, five points above the national average, which in itself was a historical record with 22%.
According to data published this Wednesday by the Ministry of Labor, in the last twelve months unemployment has fallen in the islands by 78,343 people, 27.64%, which is the third largest decrease in Spain, five points better than the average (-22.38%).
By provinces, the number of unemployed in February was 106,225 in Las Palmas, 654 less than in January (-0.61%) and 40,924 less than a year ago (-27.81%).
In Santa Cruz de Tenerife, 98,909 unemployed are registered, 1,368 less than in January (-1.36%) and 37,419 less than twelve months ago (-27.45%).
Of the total of 205,134 unemployed in the autonomous community, 89,313 are men and 115,821 are women, and 12,826 are under 25 years of age (6,848 men and 5,978 women).
Last month, unemployment decreased by 1,820 people in services (a sector that includes tourism and commerce), by 339 in construction and by 77 in livestock and agriculture.
On the other hand, it grew by 131 people in the group without previous occupation and by 79 people in the industry.
At this time, the Canary Islands has 156,329 unemployed registered in the services sector, 19,997 in construction, 7,947 in industry, 4,353 in the primary sector and 16,508 in the group without previous employment.
Last month, 55,148 labor contracts were signed in the archipelago, 189 more than in January (+0.34%) and 23,185 more than a year ago (+72.54%). Of these, 14,985 were permanent, 27.17%.
In February, 14,985 permanent contracts were signed in the Canary Islands, 4,362 more than in January (+41.06%), and 10,513 more than in the same month of 2021, more than triple (+235.08%).
On the other hand, temporary contracts were reduced by 4,173 compared to January (-9.41%), to stand at 40,163 in the balance of the month. That figure exceeds February of last year by 12,672 contracts (+46.10%).
