In the last fifteen years, unemployment figures had never fallen below 9,000 people registered in Lanzarote. We must go back to figures prior to the financial crisis of 2008 to find similar unemployment records to those observed this last month of December, when unemployment has experienced a sharp fall of 3.1% in Lanzarote compared to the previous month.
There are 290 fewer people registered on the unemployment lists in Lanzarote at the close of 2022, so that the total number of Lanzarote residents registered in search of employment has been reduced to 8,937 registered.
This is the fifth consecutive month of declines. In November unemployment fell by 1.2%, while in October the decrease was 2.8%. In August and September the decrease was smaller, 0.9% and 0.04% respectively.
So far this year, unemployment has fallen every month in Lanzarote except for the months of January and July. If in January there were 11,663 unemployed, currently there are 2,726 fewer people.
Unemployment fell more in the last two years than in the previous ten
The data is significant, because with the financial crisis of 2008, the unemployment figures increased very rapidly until reaching 17,251 unemployed at the close of 2012.
From 2013 unemployment began to fall, but never below 10,000 unemployed. The lowest figure reached after the financial crisis was at the close of 2018, with 10,879 unemployed.
Everything recovered in ten years collapsed with the covid 19 pandemic, which shot up unemployment records in Lanzarote to almost 20,000 unemployed counted in April 2021.
The decrease in the last month of the year has been greater among Lanzarote women, since there are 4.2% fewer registered at the close of 2022 compared to the previous month, although women continue to be the majority among the unemployed on the island, since they represent 56.7% of the total.
University graduates and vocational training graduates register the least unemployment
By age, the majority of the unemployed are over 45 years old and only have primary education. The unemployed with university studies or vocational training only represent 9% of the total.
Lanzarote is also the second Canary Island where unemployment has fallen more sharply in December only behind La Gomera, where unemployment has fallen by 15.7%.
In Tenerife and Gran Canaria unemployment has decreased by 2.5% and 1.8% respectively in the last month of the year.
Both La Palma, with an increase of 11.4%, and Fuerteventura, with an increase of 1.9% have seen their unemployment figures grow in December. In El Hierro there have been no changes compared to the previous month.
