The Lanzarote Business Confederation (CEL) expresses its concern about "the continuous increase in the rate of absenteeism that affects the Canary Islands and Lanzarote and that hinder the economy of the Archipelago".

In the first half of 2023, the percentage of absenteeism in the Canary Islands reached 7.1%, almost one point above the national average (6.3%), according to a report by the Randstad Research study center.

In this sense, the president of the CEL, Francisco Martínez, stressed that absenteeism, together with the lack of qualified professionals, is causing "serious problems in the competitiveness, productivity and costs of companies in Lanzarote and the Canary Islands."

In line with this, the president demanded that the competent public institutions "social agreement strategies to avoid as much as possible this problem that does not stop and that continues to undermine and hinder the business fabric and, therefore, the economy of the islands".

The sectors most affected by absenteeism at the national level are Postal and courier activities (10.9%) and Assistance in residential establishments (10.8%), occupying the highest levels. On the other hand, the Canary Islands are in the range of Communities with the highest absenteeism in Industry, Construction and Services.
