Employment contracts fall by 12% in Lanzarote so far this year compared to the same period in 2022

Despite the good performance of unemployment data in Lanzarote in recent months, job creation seems to be slowing down. So far this year, 12% fewer employment contracts have been signed in Lanzarote than in the same period of 2022.

Between January and May of this year, a total of 22,150 employment contracts were signed in Lanzarote, 12% less than those signed in the same period of 2022, when the figure amounted to 24,813, according to data from the Canary Islands Employment Observatory (OBECAN), published by the Lanzarote Data Center.

Compared to the same pre-pandemic period, i.e. between January and May of 2019, it is 21.6% less. Then there were a total of 26,945 employment contracts. On the positive side of the equation, the vast majority of employment contracts that have been signed this year are indefinite.

 

The hotel and catering industry and commerce account for more than half

One third of the total were signed in Arrecife. Next, Tías, which added 4,801 contracts. In Yaiza, more than 4,000 contracts were also signed, while in Teguise, more than 2,500 were signed.

New employment contracts in San Bartolomé amounted to 1,732, while Haría and Tinajo added 615 and 344 respectively.

By sector, the hotel and catering industry (10,107) and commerce (3,178) accounted for more than half of the island's hiring. The rest of the services sector companies hired 6,781 people.

Next, the construction sector, which added 1,443 contracts. In industry there were 502, and in agriculture 139.
