Arrecife has positioned itself as the tenth municipality with more than 20,000 inhabitants with the highest unemployment rate estimated in 2021 in Spain, according to data from the Urban Indicators 2022 report prepared by the National Institute of Statistics (INE), published this Monday.

The capital of Lanzarote closed the ranking with 24.84% unemployment last year, behind eight Andalusian municipalities and one from the Canary Islands. Specifically, Linares occupied the first place, registering an unemployment rate of 30.9%, followed by La Línea de la Concepción (30.3%), Alcalá de Guadaíra (26.9%), Jerez de la Frontera (26%), Santa Lucía de Tirajana (26.01%), Granada (25.8%), Dos Hermanas (25.1%), Córdoba (25%) and Algeciras (24.9%).

Meanwhile, the lowest unemployment rate is found in the autonomous communities of Madrid, Catalonia and the Basque Country. According to INE data, Pozuelo de Alarcón is the municipality with the lowest average unemployment rate estimated in 2021, with 6.2%, followed by Sant Cugat del Vallès (6.4%) and Las Rozas de Madrid (7.1%), Majadahonda, and Donostia and San Sebastián (7.8%).

However, it should be noted that unemployment has been reduced by almost half in the municipality of Arrecife in the last year, marking a total of 5,389 unemployed in April compared to 10,165 in the same month last year.

In addition, the unemployment rate on the island of Lanzarote has also decreased in a generalized way to 20.21% in the first quarter of 2022, a figure that has not been seen for two years, but which is still very high compared to the national average, which stands at 13.65%. Year-on-year, the fall is much greater, up to 48.74%, when there were 9,700 more unemployed, with a total of 19,903 people.
