Unemployment in Lanzarote increased by 111 people in September, reaching 17,048 unemployed

The island has 0.7% more unemployed than a month ago and 56.1% more unemployed than a year ago

Unemployment has risen again in Lanzarote, which has reached 17,048 unemployed after two months in which slight decreases had been recorded. Specifically, the island closed September with 111 more unemployed than the previous month, which represents an increase of 0.7%. 

In addition, the island has 56.1% more unemployed than a year ago, since in September 2019 there were 10,920 unemployed in Lanzarote. 

The island started the year with 11,317 unemployed, but after the start of the Covid pandemic, in March it already had 12,713 unemployed. A figure that shot up to 15,961 in April and increased to 16,871 in May and to 17,381 in June.

In July the figures improved slightly, falling to 17,081 unemployed and in August they fell to 16,937, but now they have worsened again, while in the Canary Islands and Spain as a whole the number of unemployed has fallen. 

Specifically, the archipelago registered a total of 254,280 unemployed in September, which represents a decrease of 1.21% compared to August (3,126 fewer unemployed) although 24.32% more if compared to the same month of the previous year. At the national level, unemployment fell by 26,329 people, the largest decrease in a month of September since 1996. The total number of unemployed in Spain as a whole is 3,776,485, 0.69% less than the previous month, although there are almost 700,000 more unemployed than a year ago.
