The Tías City Council, in collaboration with the Lanzarote Cabildo and the Government of the Canary Islands, through the Agreement for the Promotion of Open Commercial Areas of the Canary Islands, will condition the commercial area of La Tiñosa, with an investment of 600,000 euros, half of which (300,000 euros) will be contributed by the regional Executive and the rest between the two local administrations in equal parts (150,000 euros each).
According to statements by the mayor of Tías, José Juan Cruz Saavedra, the City Council had prepared a project in 2001 for the conditioning of open commercial areas, and that after updating it, it was sent to the Cabildo on September 27.
For the contracting of the works, the Cabildo requested from the City Council a plenary agreement so that it could withdraw that 25% that corresponds to the institution from its contributions of the year 2006. Hence, last Friday the City Council held an extraordinary and urgent plenary session to contract the services of a company as soon as possible.
An execution period of six months
The project, according to the explanations given by the mayor in statements to Radio Lanzarote, will have an execution period of 6 months and will be developed in the commercial areas located between Juan Carlos I and Roque Nublo streets, with the aim of improving the conditions of basic equipment and aesthetic amortization to stimulate local commerce, and recover, maintain and promote the center of La Tiñosa.
"We want to improve the environment of what we know as the three cups crossing, with widening of sidewalks, public lighting, street furniture and conditioning of the entire environment," explained the mayor. "It is an important commercial area but it is not organized by means of any shopping center, and it depends on the connection between the port of La Tiñosa and that of Corralejo, in which during 2004 there was a movement of 140,000 passengers," added José Juan Cruz.
The idea is to improve the image of the place that serves as a transit for all those visitors, and at the same time unite the Biosfera shopping center and the historic center of La Tiñosa, with which the merchants will also benefit.
An area deteriorated by its antiquity
The actions of the project are aimed at recovering an area that is deteriorated by its antiquity, corresponding to the first stage of the development of Puerto del Carmen. Thus, in Jameos street, in the section between Botabara and Juan Carlos I streets, the sidewalk will be widened and the old pipes will be replaced, the entire road will be repaved and street furniture and parking spaces will be introduced.
The existing vegetation will be respected and large planters will be built for the palm trees.
In El Poril street, the action mainly affects the pavement and street furniture. A small square will be created in which benches and planters and a wooden pergola will be placed. Likewise, a part of the central wall that divides the street in two will be demolished to have a planter.
Within the section between Los Jameos and the Passage towards Roque del Oeste, in Juan Carlos I street, a modification of the alignment of the sidewalk will be made, extending it at the expense of the battery parking spaces that will become in line. In the mentioned passage, its structure is changed, the access ramp is restricted to expand the platform, where a central body of street furniture will be placed, with benches of different sizes and two wooden pergolas.
In Roque Nublo street, between Bajamar and La Gomera, the sidewalk will be widened, it will be equipped with street furniture and luminaires and the aerial wiring will be channeled under it. This action will continue along Bajamar street, in its section between Roque Nublo and El Hierro.
Tourist Infrastructure Plan
In the same plenary session held last Friday, the Tías City Council approved an agreement by which the next paving of a series of streets in Puerto del Carmen was agreed. After in the last extraordinary plenary session the Cabildo was requested to deduct from the income that corresponds to the City Council for the municipal charter of the year 2006, the 493,000 euros that this corporation contributes to the "Conditioning of the tourist area of Puerto del Carmen", in which the Government of the Canary Islands also collaborates, the First Island Institution will contribute 120,000 euros in the current year, the City Council the aforementioned 493,000 euros, and the regional Executive 1,557,000 in 2007.
For the streets that are only aged, the City Council announces a surface treatment with a monolayer of bituminous slurry type LB3, while for the streets that have the road surface with substantial deterioration, the City Council has planned the application of a layer of hot asphalt conglomerate, while correcting the detected soft spots. Likewise, sidewalk pavement curbs with an average width of 1.50 meters will be installed, after placing low voltage, telephone and public lighting network pipes. In addition, all the affected streets will be provided with the corresponding vertical and horizontal signage.
Pluvial sanitation
On the other hand, the mayor announced the launch of an upcoming project for the sanitation of the pluvial network of the municipality of Tías. "Next October 7 -this Friday- we will hold a meeting with the general director of Water of the Government of the Canary Islands, Orlando Umpiérrez, and the general director of Water of the central Government".
Although José Juan Cruz Saavedra did not want to anticipate events, it is expected that during said meeting the leaders will agree on the financing deadlines for the renewal of the pluvial network of the tourist area of Puerto del Carmen.
Golf course
During the last plenary session, the units of use that would correspond to the City Council with the construction of the new golf course were also discussed. "We have rejected the allegations that the Popular Party and Citizen Alternative presented within the deadline, ratifying the previous plenary agreement. Cruz Saavedra insisted that these revenues would be used so that the Council continues to provide public services to citizens.
"The nursing home that is being built will have a capacity of 92 places as a day center, and another 20 places during daytime hours," recalled the mayor.
