The Malaga Film Festival, the showcase for the most important premieres of Spanish cinema, has selected Canary Islands as a guest territory in its industry area, the MAFIZ.
Thus, the Canary Islands cinema will have a preferential space, from which Canary Islands Film will be able to promote the rise achieved by the cinema made in the islands.
In Malaga, numerous Canary Islands projects will be exhibited between March 1 and 10, such as 'La Hojarasca', by Macu Machín, which, after its success at the Berlinale, can now be seen in the ZonaZine section of the Malaga Film Festival itself.
The short films 'Cuadro', the fiction by Anatael Pérez, and the documentary 'It was hot that day: a jandiman story', signed by the Guatemalan Chisco Valdés with production by the Canary Islander Amissus Media, will also compete. Out of competition will be 'La manzana', by Sara Sálamo.
This is joined by four other projects within different sections of the industry area, which is concentrated between March 4 and 8; among them the premiere of 'Voy a desaparecer', the first film by Coré Ruiz. There will also be a screening session of 'Lo carga el diablo', by Guillermo Polo (Volcano Films and Japónica Films), and the documentary 'Rave Culture-a new era', by Eduardo Cubillo (La Gaveta Producciones). Among the activities of the Short Corner there will be a screening of the Canarias en Corto catalog in two sessions and the piece 'Salón Dorado', by Arima León will also be screened.
Honorary Biznaga for the Canary Islands
Territories is a section of the Malaga Festival, created by the industrial side of this festival to facilitate the creation of international cooperation networks, promote meetings between professionals and promote the brand of the guest territory.
The presentation of the Silver Biznaga to the islands will take place on March 7, in an event that will be attended by President Fernando Clavijo.
In the case of the Canary Islands, this designation occurs in 2024, that is, fifteen years after the declaration of Audiovisual as a strategic sector in the islands, which gives the opportunity to publicize the progress made in these years and take a snapshot of what the sector means today.
Canary Islands Activities Program
From March 5, Canary Islands Film will deploy an extensive program of activities, which includes a meeting to present the incentives and subsidies offered for this sector, as well as the presentation of the International Laboratory isLABentura Canarias, and a networking event for professionals and companies from the islands with a selection of guests.
On the other hand, it will participate in a forum focused on Minority Co-production, in which experts from some of the most powerful entities in this field will give their vision of the opportunity offered by this line of aid to Spanish, European and Latin American producers.
In parallel, there will be Canary Islands projects in the development phase participating in different sections of the MAFIZ. In MAFF Malaga Fund & Co-production Event will be 'El Exterior', by Víctor Moreno; 'Sicario', by Daute Campos; 'El niño y el tiburón', by Lucía Florez; and 'Fiesta negra', by Guillermo Magariños.
In the Talent section will be the young Canary Islander Cris Vivó with her project 'Por amor', while, in the Film Library, the online platform for viewing films produced from 2022 will be 'Un hogar sin armarios', by Eduardo Cubillo; 'Benito Pérez Buñuel', by Luis Roca; & 'Yo tenía una vida', by Octavio Guerra and 'Rave Culture- A new era' by Eduardo Cubillo.
In the Cambio de Plano program, by DAMA and Netflix, the Canary Islander Joel Cazorla participates, with the project 'El gran bazar de mis padres'. It should also be noted that the Quirino Awards for Ibero-American Animation, the event that is held annually on the island of Tenerife, will announce its nominated works for the next edition in a very special event, also from Malaga.
