Lanzarote closed August with 144 fewer unemployed than in July, but with 5,856 more than a year ago

The island ended the month with 16,937 unemployed, 52.8% more than a year ago

August closed in Lanzarote with 144 fewer unemployed than in July but with 5,856 more than a year ago. Specifically, according to figures from the Canary Islands Employment Observatory, August ended with 16,937 unemployed on the island, 0.8% less than the previous month, but 52.8% more than in August 2019, when there were 11,081 unemployed.

By municipalities, unemployment has decreased in Arrecife, San Bartolomé, Tías, Tinajo and Yaiza, while it has increased in Haría and Teguise. In the case of the capital, at the end of August there were 8,625 unemployed, 74 less than the previous month, while Haría had 520, four more than in August. For its part, San Bartolomé closed August with 1,874 unemployed, 20 less than in July; and Teguise did so with 1,701, nine more than the previous month.

Tías ended last month with 1,898 unemployed, 15 less than in July; Tinajo with 556, six less than the previous month; and Yaiza with 1,763, 43 less.

In the Canary Islands as a whole, unemployment also decreased in August, specifically by 243 people, ending the month with 257,206 unemployed. This represents a decrease of 0.09% compared to the previous month, although, in the year-on-year comparison, there is also an increase, in this case of 25.46%.
