Lanzarote's vehicle fleet reached 138,687 units last March, 5,000 more than in the same month last year and 7,000 more than were recorded before the pandemic, according to the Lanzarote Data Center.
Therefore, the island has 888 vehicles per thousand inhabitants, above the average for the Canary Islands, which stands at 821, and much higher than the national average, which is 512 vehicles.
In fact, no European country, with the exception of the microstates of Monaco and San Marino, has a rate higher than 700 vehicles per thousand inhabitants. The first on the list is Luxembourg with 681, followed by Italy with 663 cars.
In the United States, the country with the highest rate in the world, excluding microstates, is around 800 vehicles per thousand inhabitants.
A reading by islands shows that Lanzarote is the third in the archipelago with the highest number of cars per inhabitant. According to data from the Canary Islands Institute of Statistics (ISTAC), the one with the most cars is La Palma with 942 units per thousand residents, followed by El Hierro with 886.
In the other islands there are fewer vehicles than in Lanzarote. In Tenerife there are 839, in Fuerteventura 814, in Gran Canaria 802 and in La Gomera 763.
