The Canary Islands closed the month of January with 84,403 people in temporary employment regulation files (ERTE), which means 5,197 more workers than in December, when there were 79,206. According to reports this Tuesday from the Ministry of Inclusion, Social Security and Migration, these figures make the archipelago the autonomous community with the highest percentage of members under some form of ERTE, specifically 13.7%.

In addition, Lanzarote is the most affected island, since at the end of December it had more than 20,000 and the number has continued to rise, which means that it concentrates one in four workers in ERTE in the archipelago.

In Spain as a whole, workers in ERTE at the end of January were 738,969, which is 35,625 more workers than in December.

According to Social Security, in January there continued to be a transfer from the old ERTEs to those established in the new protection scheme that came into force on September 30 and lasted until January 31. This scheme has been extended again until May 31 without many changes.

In this way, of the total number of workers in ERTE with which January closed, 175,452 belong to the 'old' ERTE, without exemptions to Social Security. For its part, the number of people included in the new ERTEs, with special exemptions for 'ultra-protected' sectors and coverage for those companies affected by administrative restrictions, totaled 486,332 workers in January, almost 66% of the total.

One third of the ERTE, in the hotel industry

According to the Ministry, there is a significant sectoral concentration of workers protected by ERTE, since one third of the workers protected in Spain belong to the hotel industry (food and beverage service), with 248,833 affected.

The accommodation services sector, meanwhile, has 112,980 workers in ERTE, while retail trade has 59,003 affected employees and wholesale, 38,255.

Sports and entertainment activities (30,671 affected) and travel agencies (21,213 workers in ERTE) also add a significant number of workers in ERTE.

The almost 739,000 workers who were in an ERTE at the end of January represent 5.15% of the total number of members of the General Regime, with an "important" geographical concentration, according to the Ministry.

Thus, the Canary Islands is the community that has the highest percentage of members under some form of ERTE, with 84,403 protected workers, 13.7% of its members. It is followed by the Balearic Islands, with 35,156 workers in ERTE, 11.4% of its members.

At the other extreme are Murcia and Extremadura, which only register 3.1% and 3% of their Social Security members in an ERTE.
