The General Directorate of Fisheries of the Government of the Canary Islands has published a resolution by which the validity of recreational maritime fishing licenses expiring since September 1, 2024 is extended until December 31, 2024.
The Canary Islands Executive establishes this measure as a response to the cyberattack suffered on September 17 by the public company Gestión del Medio Rural (GMR), the entity responsible for processing these permits, which affected its servers and internal systems and altered their normal operation.
Thus, due to this incident and in accordance with the assumptions included in the Law on the Common Administrative Procedure of Public Administrations in the event of cyber incidents, the period for the renewal of these licenses is extended, so that those that have expired will be considered valid until the end of the year.
Given the dependence of the information system, applications and computer equipment to process all renewal and issuance procedures, the issuance of any new recreational fishing license may only be carried out after the recovery of the computer systems for its processing.
