The General Directorate of Commerce and Consumption of the Government of the Canary Islands has approved the first commercial license to Mercadona on the island of Lanzarote, which plans to open a commercial establishment of 2,111 square meters in the municipality of Arrecife, specifically in Argana Alta.

Although the company is awaiting other authorizations to open more establishments on the island, including one more in the capital and another in Playa Honda, finally the one in Argana has been the first to prosper. The plot on which Mercadona will be installed needed the development of a urban planning instrument, the Action Unit Number 12, which six months ago was definitively approved by the Government of the Canary Islands.

The general director of Commerce and Consumption, Gustavo Matos, assures that "the increase in competition will especially benefit consumers, on an island where the price of the shopping basket is one of the highest in the Archipelago."

In a press release, Matos explains that the entry of a new agent in the distribution activity on the Island, "after years of administrative difficulties, marks a new stage in the sector and trusts that competition in the conejero market will continue to increase for the benefit of consumers." The director also states that "one of the most important tasks of his department is to ensure that there is a balance between the interests and needs of businesses and consumers, as well as between the different commercial formats."

According to Gustavo Matos, "the opening of new commercial establishments generates employment and benefits local producers and suppliers, thus stimulating economic activity."
