The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, affirmed this Wednesday that the Canary Islands will be in the negotiations of the waters with Morocco, as it is already doing through the representative designated by the Autonomous Government, and assured that "the Canarians can rest assured because the Executive is going to continue defending their interests".
Sánchez has spoken in response to a question from the spokesperson of the Canarian Coalition, Ana Oramas, on whether the Government of the Canary Islands will participate within the Spanish delegation for the delimitation of maritime spaces with Morocco-Atlantic facade, within the working group created for this purpose.
The president has indicated that the representative of the Canary Islands Government will participate in the meetings in which their presence is required, in application of the competences of the community and its statute of autonomy.
"They can rest assured, sure that the Government will continue to fulfill its commitments," added Sánchez, who has reported that the Canarian delegate has already participated in two meetings, held in June and last October.
The head of the Executive has added that the Canary Islands is one of the communities that benefits most from the implementation of the joint declaration signed with Morocco last April.
For her part, the deputy of CC has expressed her confidence that the Canary Islands will be "in the commission that decides its future" and has assured that in the working group created on the delimitation of maritime spaces the Canarian representative had been excluded.
She recalled that the Canarian Statute is the only one that includes the sea within the territory of the community and also contemplates the participation of the Canary Islands in the actions of competence in said waters.
Oramas has pointed out that the aforementioned working group had not met since 2005, when the person designated by the Canary Islands Government attended the meetings, and has lamented that despite the efforts of the regional Executive in this matter, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs continues without allowing its participation in the group.
