In the Canary Islands there are 8,551 families that hoard together about 60,000 million euros, which represents 27% of all the wealth of the archipelago.

Some have more, others less, but on average they come out to seven million euros each and barely represent 1% of the population of the Canary Islands.

On the other side of the equation, 99% of Canarian families have 193,000 euros on average, according to the newspaper La Provincia based on a study by the Center for Economic Policies of the Esade Business School.

The report has measured for the first time the levels of inequality in the wealth of the different autonomous communities. And the Canary archipelago is one of the worst off.

This is attested to by the GINI index, the quintessential indicator for calculating this aspect and which is based on the accumulated distribution of income or wealth versus the accumulated distribution of the population.

Its values are represented between 0 and 100 and the higher it is, the greater the level of inequality. In the islands this index climbs to 75.2, the highest in all of Spain.

Although it is not too far from the Spanish average - located at 71.3% - it is a long way from the 62.4% of Castilla La Mancha, the autonomous community where it is lowest.

Other autonomous communities such as Madrid or the Balearic Islands also suffer strong inequalities, but have a greater capacity for redistribution.

In the islands there is an average wealth per household of 261,400 euros. Within this amount is the value of real estate, both first and second homes, money in the bank, salaries, pensions and companies.

The Spanish average amounts to 380,000 euros, doubled in other wealthier regions such as Madrid, where the average wealth exceeds 687,000 euros. Read the full story in La Provincia
