In the year 1776, the monarch Carlos III ordered the construction of a fortress in Arrecife whose construction pursued two fundamental objectives.

In the first place, the creation of a defensive fortress that would protect the population from possible pirate attacks.

But also the construction of the fortress served to ensure that the island population had a source of occupation to alleviate the enormous famine that plagued Lanzarote in the late eighteenth century. Thus, for a long time this unique building was colloquially called the famine fortress.

Two centuries later, Manrique's genius turned a practically forgotten castle into an art museum with a unique panoramic restaurant, which features views over the port of Arrecife.

Paradoxically, what was once known as the famine fortress, is today one of the most recommended places to taste its exquisite gastronomy. Learn about the gastronomic proposal of the MIAC Restaurant here.

Enjoy visiting one of the best panoramic views of Arrecife, its museum of contemporary art and one of Manrique's most important spatial interventions in the atmosphere of a historic fortress.
