Lanzarote hosted the first edition of the Tasting Room of the University of La Laguna, where a group of professionals from the hospitality sector, together with the students of the eighth edition of the Specialist Course in Wine Tourism Management and Sensory Analysis of Wines, were in charge of testing the offer of the seven wineries of the Canary archipelago.
The event, held last Saturday, May 28, was attended by the Tenerife wineries Loher, Ferrera, Monje, Cumbres de Abona and Bodegas Insulares Tenerife, together with the La Palma winery Viñarda, and the host on this occasion Bodegas El Grifo.
The program of this first edition included a master class by the specialist in Sensory Analysis of Wines, Jesús de las Heras, entitled "The recognition of the diversity of the Canary Islands as a wine region", where he explained the value of the characteristics that elevate Canarian wines to differentiate themselves from the rest of the wine regions of the world.
For his part, Gabriel Santos, deputy director of the institutional Chair, pointed out that "in 2020 in the Canary Islands, wine production in the archipelago decreased by almost 10% compared to 2019, mainly due to the impact that climate change is having on grape production and its winemaking", but he insists that the Canarian wineries continue to produce wines of the highest quality recognized in national and international competitions.
Tasting Room will have a continuation in the coming months on different islands of the archipelago, expanding the offer of participating wineries, and including other local gastronomic products.
