The president of the Canary Islands, Ángel Víctor Torres, has stated this Monday that starting this week the pace of vaccination in the archipelago will increase, although he clarified that the Canary Islands has the "difficulty" of being an island territory although it will go "as fast as possible." In any case, the arrival of new vaccines, he said, is what "encourages optimism."
Torres explained that since the beginning of vaccination on December 27 and until this Sunday, January 10, 74 percent of block 1 has been vaccinated -residents in elderly centers, personnel working with them and disability centers-, which is about to end, pointing out that this is the "most complicated" phase, which has "greater contingency."
In addition, he added that vaccination will now begin with healthcare personnel -which has already started in the case of Lanzarote-, in such a way that the "pace will increase this week", although he clarified that it must be taken into account that two vaccines must be administered, in such a way that if the second one does not arrive, the work is "ruined."
In this sense, he admitted that "today it will be difficult for the shipment to arrive with the closure of Barajas" in Madrid, due to the Filomena storm.
Vaccinated population in summer
On the other hand, in order to have the largest number of vaccinated population in the summer, the president of the Canary Islands pointed out that the trained nurses will be expanded, who "are more than 1,000."
In this sense, Torres maintains that in the summer that 70 percent of Canarians must be vaccinated, pointing out that it is a "priority to vaccinate as much as possible" with a "coherent" work to have that percentage of the population vaccinated in the summer.
In this regard, the president of the Canary Islands has been "happy with the work" of the Canary Islands Health Service, noting that they are doing an "excellent job", indicating that they have worked "every day except Three Kings Day."
On the other hand, Torres wanted to clarify that the measures adopted in one or another island are in line with what was adopted in the Interterritorial Health Council, taking into account the levels of contagion and the measures to be adopted in each of them.
