The Provincial Court of Santa Cruz de Tenerife has sentenced a woman to 6 months in prison and to pay 2,000 euros after admitting to being the author of a hate crime for hurling racist insults at a man while walking through the center of Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
The events took place on October 11, 2023 in the Plaza de España, when the defendant approached the victim and chased him for about 15 minutes, addressing him with insulting expressions for being a migrant and for the color of his skin.
Of the amount to be paid, 1,000 euros are imposed as a fine and the same amount as civil liability.
Initially, the Prosecutor's Office was asking for two years in prison and to pay almost 3,000 euros.
The Prosecutor's Office agrees that the woman does not enter prison, despite being a repeat offender for crimes of theft and abuse in the family environment, as long as she does not commit any crime for 2 years.
She must also participate in a course on equality and complete 32 days of community service.
The altercation took place in the middle of the street where the accused was shouting, insulting and disrespecting the victim, who felt humiliated and ashamed to the point of calling the police.
When the agents arrived at the scene, they assessed the situation and after collecting the testimonies of eyewitnesses, they proceeded to arrest the accused.
