The lava from the La Palma volcano continues its relentless advance

The volcanic surveillance network for 24-hour monitoring of the National Geographic Institute (IGN) has located during the night a total of 55 earthquakes in the vicinity of the Cumbre Vieja volcano eruption, 8 of them with magnitudes greater than 3 (mbLg).

The maximum magnitude recorded was 4.5 corresponding to the earthquake located southwest of the municipality of Villa de Mazo at 02.27 hours. With intensity IV EMS and a depth of 37 km, it was felt in numerous population centers throughout the island. This tremor was preceded by another recorded at the same time of magnitude 4.1.

Yesterday 73 earthquakes were located, the largest of 4.4 mbLg, located southwest of the municipality of Villa de Mazo at 15.33 hours. With intensity III-IV EMS and a depth of 36 km, this tremor was also felt in almost the entire island.

Yesterday Wednesday an emission center located on the southeast flank was reactivated, a situation typical of the Strombolian mechanism fissure eruption of the La Palma volcano. The area affected by the lava amounts to 640.27 hectares and the total width of the three lava tongues reaches 1,770 meters.

The tongue that runs through the northwest, which forced the evacuation of 800 residents last Tuesday, is losing power; however, the arm that runs further south accumulates the maximum energy from the emitting center and moves at about 50 meters per hour.

Tonight, the Special Plan for Volcanic Emergencies of the Canary Islands (PEVOLCA) has ordered the evacuation of new neighborhoods in the municipality of Los Llanos de Aridane due to the forecast of the lava flow advance.

The air quality is good and east wind is expected, which will allow the ash to move west, towards the sea. At the moment all the Canary Islands airports are fully operational.

The President of the Canary Islands reported yesterday on the end of the assessment for the allocation of the first 18 homes and the provision of another 40 homes in the coming days. In addition, different housing solutions are being studied to immediately resolve the situation of people who have lost their homes.

On the other hand, in addition to the desalination plants installed for the supply of irrigation water, today is scheduled the arrival to the area of a tanker ship chartered by the Ministry for Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge.
