The Minister of Housing of the Government of the Canary Islands, Pablo Rodríguez (CC), stated this Tuesday that the official occupation data does not correspond to the "excessive alarm" that, in his opinion, some "media or political parties" generate, although he said that it is necessary to "protect private property."
During a response to the deputy of the Popular Party, Jacob Qadri, Rodríguez pointed out that the occupation is a symptom that we are facing a situation of housing emergency and that it shows the difficulties of the population to access housing.
"The housing problem was previously limited to the vulnerable population and now it is transferred to a large part of the population. It is necessary to find a balance between the social protection of vulnerable families, which is key because there is a constitutional right to housing, which must be worked on, with the balance so as not to leave the owner unprotected and that the supply increases instead of decreasing," Rodríguez reflected.
Regarding that alarm generated by "the media and some parties," Rodríguez said that he was not referring to the Popular Party, given the outbursts of this bench, but "more to the extreme," in reference to Vox.
In his speech, Jacob Qadri lamented that "there is no longer any law or respect for anything or anyone," and wondered "what country do we live in."
"With the lack of housing in the Canary Islands, we must give greater protection to the owners and not to the squatters. The legal insecurity is maximum. A situation of enormous risk is being generated. Private property is respected," Qadri requested.
