The Ministry of Health of the Government of the Canary Islands has reported that 14 possible cases of Covid due to the BA.2 subvariant of Omicron are being studied in the Tenerife health area. The result of the sequencing will be known after the completion of the study, which is expected to be completed by the end of next week.
Of the 14 cases, three are still complying with the corresponding home isolation and the rest are already discharged, without registering complications due to Covid. Only one of the cases, a newborn, was admitted for a few days under clinical surveillance as a precaution and, given its favorable evolution, was discharged after three days. According to experts, this subvariant appears to have a higher transmissibility than the BA.1 variant of Omicron but not greater severity.
The genomic surveillance network for Covid-19 in the Canary Islands includes a protocolized system for the detection, monitoring and control of the presence of the different variants of SARS-Cov2 in the Islands, whose results are communicated weekly to the Ministry of Health, as is protocolized for all autonomous communities.
This network was launched in March of last year, through the Directorate of Public Health, its different controls allow to obtain a real radiography of the incidence of the different strains of the virus in the Archipelago.
