The Valleseco City Council (Gran Canaria) has initiated the bidding process for the construction of the first public cohousing project in the Canary Islands, with 14 residential units.

This is a pioneering initiative in the Canary Islands that will allow the launch of accommodations aimed at fostering community life, energy self-consumption, and population retention in rural areas, the City Council has highlighted.

The Local Government Board has approved the initiation of the contracting process for the work titled "Building for the implementation and promotion of 'cohousing' and collaborative housing in the municipality of Valleseco," which is being processed through a simplified open procedure, with several award criteria and ordinary processing.

For the City Council, this is a strategic investment for the future of the municipality, with a base tender budget of 1.87 million euros and an estimated contract value of 1.7 million euros, jointly financed by the Ministry of Institutional Cooperation and International Solidarity of the Cabildo de Gran Canaria, the Gran Canaria Housing Consortium, and a municipal contribution.

The works will have an execution period of twelve months and interested companies can submit their offers until December 26, 2025, at 2:00 PM, through the Public Sector Contracting Platform.
The opening of economic offers is scheduled for December 29, 2025.

This project aims to implement an innovative and socially sustainable residential model through the rehabilitation of a traditional dwelling located at Párroco Marrero Díaz street, 12, as well as its expansion into two adjoining rustic plots, forming a residential space of approximately 2,200 square meters in total area.

Fourteen private accommodations

The complex will feature 14 private accommodations, each approximately 25 square meters, designed for individual or family use, complemented by ample common areas, including a shared kitchen, social spaces, community gardens, vertical vegetation, and parking areas

This co-housing model promotes a way of life based on cooperation, mutual support, and resource optimization, also incorporating energy efficiency and self-consumption criteria, aligned with sustainability and ecological transition objectives.

The homes will be intended to form a public collaborative community, which will be managed through a user cooperative, guaranteeing lifelong use of the accommodations, under criteria of coexistence, co-responsibility, and active participation of the residents.

The mayor of Valleseco, José Luis Rodríguez Quintana, has stated that "this project positions the municipality as a benchmark in the Canary Islands for social and residential innovation, demonstrating that brave solutions can be driven from the public sector to address the demographic challenge".

The mayor added that "cohousing is a key tool for attracting population, fostering roots, and strengthening the social fabric of Valleseco."
