The Deputy Minister of External Action of the Government of the Canary Islands, José Luis Perestelo, has stated that he is in permanent contact with groups and entities that bring together Canary Islanders residing in Venezuela, and that they are well, except for the concern and uncertainty generated by the situation following the attack by the United States.
Perestelo, in statements to EFE, recalled that the Canary Islander community in Venezuela consists of about 70,000 people according to consular records, although the more realistic figure is around 100,000.
The deputy minister pointed out that the President of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo, is also in permanent contact with entities and groups, as well as with the office that the regional government has in that country.
The Canary Islander population has been asked, Perestelo continued, to remain calm and not leave their homes until the situation is clarified after the air attack by the United States and the possible departure of President Nicolás Maduro.
"We are in permanent contact with our people," Perestelo insisted, also recalling that they maintain contact with the Embassy of Spain in the country and with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
