An Air Europa flight on the Gran Canaria-Madrid route had to be diverted to Malaga airport on Thursday afternoon after a passenger refused to wear a mask during the trip, which is mandatory throughout the journey due to the coronavirus crisis.

The flight, which was due to arrive in Madrid at around 9:00 p.m., had to delay its arrival after having to divert to Malaga airport, after the passenger in question, when asked "repeatedly" by the crew to wear the mask on board, which is mandatory, refused, according to sources from Air Europa.

This refusal prompted the crew to activate the relevant protocol, diverting to the nearest airport, and once in Malaga, Civil Guard officers took charge of the passenger, while the aircraft with the rest of the travelers headed for its destination, Madrid.
