A reader of La Voz de Lanzarote spotted a guincho in La Recova de Arrecife this Sunday. The osprey, classified as a protected and vulnerable species, has been observed in the capital of Lanzarote.
As this reader points out, the guincho was fishing in El Charco de San Ginés. The species, "almost condemned to extinction by the invasion of its habitat", has appeared on the island.
In total, there are only seven pairs of guinchos throughout the Canary Archipelago. This reader classifies its appearance as a sign of the value of the island's coastline, which is a transit point for a large number of birds, "to which no importance is given".
At this point, the sighting of birds "makes us rethink the need to reflect on their protection. Hopefully more will appear and the flag of Arrecife, in which it appears, will serve to dignify the protection of an abandoned coastline," concludes this reader.
