Violence Shakes Sports

February 25 2025 (19:56 WET)

It is a shame that every week violence in sports becomes the main protagonist in the events that take place every weekend in the capital. Now it was the turn in a youth soccer game. Unfortunately, this is not an isolated event and requires urgent action beyond a banner, which is the only thing that the absent Councilor for Sports, Eli Merino, has come up with. Of course, if they put the same effort into the celebration of parties, this would not happen so often.

It is not something that the municipal government is directly to blame for, but the inaction in the face of these events is reprehensible. It would not be bad if our soccer fields could have a police presence to guarantee the safety of the attendees. Of course, this would involve an additional cost through overtime and it is something that they are not willing to assume unless those hours are used for the celebration of parties.

Although if you want to tackle the problem from the root, it must be done from education. It is necessary that schools give talks and workshops highlighting values such as respect, companionship and rejecting all types of violence. Also raising awareness among all sports entities is essential. Within the item that is allocated to sports subsidies, the Department of Sports could assess fair play and anti-violence criteria to reward the entities that comply and penalize those that do not.

Arrecife cannot allow violence to become the main protagonist weekend after weekend. If we are the third capital of the Canary Islands, we must demonstrate it and not only with partying and more partying. I don't expect anything from the absent councilor either because she may not even know about the problem. It is possible that if she decides to stop by the Arrecife Department of Sports, they will inform her, but of course you would have to go there.
