The politician's concern

June 16 2025 (11:16 WEST)

What's wrong? Are you worried? We have heard these questions, asked by our loved ones, and not so much, on many occasions. Our worries, in our lives, have been, and will be, numerous, for various reasons. Worry is a state of the soul difficult to hide, as all our thoughts are directed to the worry itself. Our gesture, our gaze, our way of walking, everything, is imbued with that sorrow, and, such is the case, that when they ask us if we are worried, we do not answer; we continue with our work, because the answer would be obvious, and our silence confirms it.

It is amazing that we do not see concern in the images that the press offers us of politicians. And of course, there are many reasons for concern. Their faces always show complacency in their tasks, full satisfaction with themselves, certainty that their management is adequate, many smiles, of all kinds. The smiles. The most frequent smile we see is a forced smile, not natural, theatrical, of a bad actor, false. A "fool" smile as we say in the Canary Islands. The greatest, unparalleled example is the smile of our Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez.

We should worry that our politicians do not show signs of concern for the multiple problems that affect us, which, for the position they hold, for which we have voted for them, and it is implicit in that responsibility, that they have assumed. Or at least we think they have assumed it. They ran for elections so that we would vote for them. We have done it. We have voted for them, with our vote, which is no small thing. We have voted for them, so that they would solve our problems.

It is worrying that they do not worry, that they do not seem worried about us. There is, in my opinion, one exception: The President of the Government of the Canary Islands, Mr. Clavijo, who in the problem of immigrant children arriving on our coasts, a multitude of African children and young people, who escape from their misery in their countries of origin, seeking a way out, to so much anguish in the face of absolute lack, and, our President Clavijo, upon not receiving in his desperate call, a supportive response from the Presidents of the rest of the Autonomous Communities of our country, we saw him deeply worried, very affected, even desperate. It made you want to put an arm around his shoulders to appease his torment. It is still a consolation that there is, at least, one politician with enough sensitivity to feel worried.

And what can we do with those politicians who have lost their sensitivity, their capacity to respond to our problems, ... , to worry about us, because we feel, we see, that they do not worry. The problems, when they arise, and there are many in our society, the first thing would be to worry; confirm that there is a problem that exists, that should be solved, that the solution should not be easy, because there are no easy solutions, and then, given this panorama, the normal thing would be, once the worry has appeared, to solve the problem that afflicts us. The question would be: What can we do with those politicians who do not worry? I do not know.
