The Government Group of Arrecife, composed of Coalición Canaria and Partido Popular, have made their priorities very clear. They have taken that phrase of "bread and circus to the people" very seriously, wasting millions of euros on parties and celebrations. Of course, far from the mayor's house, who needs to rest to continue showing off his disastrous management. Of course, this has led to neglecting areas of vital importance such as sports.
The clubs of Arrecife are in a critical situation. The council has not paid the subsidies, causing sports entities to suffer consequences that affect their activity, which is so beneficial for the residents of Arrecife. And while the absent councilor, Eli Merino, continues partying, the more than 20 files from the 2022/2023 season remain unresolved. This blocks the payment of the 2023/2024 season and will not be resolved until at least March 31, although, with the null management capacity of the councilor, they run the risk of being lost because the deadline expires.
The absent councilor, Eli Merino, has proven to be one of the worst that have passed through the city council, denouncing the lack of human resources in the Department of Sports, when she has had 3 technicians, 3 assistants and 3 advisors. Also even with the Chamber of Commerce (which she herself hired through a minor contract, for the justification of the 2022/2023 season). Never before has the Department of Sports had so many resources, when I had the honor of directing the Sports Area we only had two technicians and an administrative assistant and the subsidies were always paid in a timely manner.
It is unworthy that this happens in the third capital of the Canary Islands. The physical activity of children and adults is in serious danger and it will be on their conscience if any club closes because they have not done their job. Or they have not wanted to do it. Of course, directing an area through a WhatsApp group does not make things easier because its only priority is to please the boss in order to have a seat for the next legislature. And if not, we will see her in another political formation, since she is an expert in going to the sun that warms the most.
We are in the hands of incompetents. A mayor who no one has voted for nor probably would have. And a councilor who we will see who she represents in the next elections, but maybe Festivities would have been better for her. It is the perfect mix for a chaos that does not foresee a solution in the short term. At this rate, the current campaign will end and the clubs will owe two seasons, which could lead to the disappearance of sports entities with a lot of history in our municipality.
