Following the report broadcast last weekend by the program "La Noria", in which more than explicit images were seen practicing sex in the Maspalomas dunes, the Gran Canaria institutions have shown their outrage and have announced forceful actions. And of course, they would do well to be outraged and take measures, but not against the television network, Tele 5, but against themselves and against this "activity".
However, demagoguery has reached unsuspected shores this week because of the wretched report, which ultimately only served to demonstrate with videos a reality that occurs on one of the emblematic beaches of the Canary Islands. And launching a message to citizens that there is a Judeo-Masonic plot against the island, which recently experienced a similar situation with the Arena Mix program on Antena 3, may serve to distract attention and get the people of Gran Canaria to close ranks in defense of their island, but it forgets the fundamental thing, which is to put an end to these practices.
Obviously, images like those do not help tourism and Gran Canaria would certainly have been better off if that report had not been broadcast. But it would be even better not to have black spots that at any given moment can be disseminated in a national media outlet, or simply be seen or suffered by residents and tourists.
As said by the CC deputy for Gran Canaria, María del Mar Julios, who brought some sanity to this situation: "It is time for the tourism officials of the municipality and the Cabildo to move from outrage to action, and act in a way that Gran Canaria cannot be linked to exclusively sexual tourism again. We must prevent this type of act from occurring because if they were seen on a television program last weekend, this means that it is the image that the thousands of tourists who visit the Maspalomas Dunes every day, one of our main tourist attractions, may encounter."
Instead of killing the messenger, the Gran Canaria Cabildo and the San Bartolomé de Tirajana City Council should focus on adopting measures to curb sexual practices in the open air and in full view of everyone, which, among other things, even violate the law.
However, the island institutions and some political parties are too busy with the competition of ideas that has begun. From the Gran Canaria Tourist Board they state that "stolen images are being used tortuously to harm the island and harm our main industry".
Nueva Canarias (NC) also joined "the theory that there is an intention to damage the tourist image of Gran Canaria". And from the PP, even, its spokesperson in the Gran Canaria Cabildo went further and launched to affirm that "some" want to take advantage of the economic crisis to divert part of the tourism. And all this, said without choking and falling shortly after in a brilliant contradiction. And it is that after affirming that the program showed "a series of activities of dubious legality that, apparently, took place in public spaces with total impunity", he added that it gave "the impression that this is a kind of lawless island, which is not true at any time". Lawless, it will not be. But certainly, as far as this issue is concerned, its compliance is not being properly ensured.
Therefore, if they prefer to think that there is an international plot by other tourist destinations so that chains as opposed as Antena 3 and Tele 5 agree to broadcast reports that are detrimental to their island, the only thing they are going to achieve is not focusing efforts on what is truly a priority: resolving the situation.
And if they really fulfill their "threat" and go to the Courts, the magistrate will probably have a fit of laughter. Especially if, afterwards, those from the Transexualidad Clínica de España Collective arrive, who apparently also feel alluded to and have asked for a candle in this burial, addressing Tele 5 to make a "redress" report to talk about the "excellences" that the Canary Islands have, since they consider that with the images of "La Noria" they have also "damaged the gay tourism that benefits the islands".
But no matter how much groups and some politicians have asked to appear on the network and in this program to counteract the report, they should be aware that if they do not propose something with sensationalism, morbidity, some fighting and doses of sex, it will be difficult to make a dent in the programming of a Saturday night on Tele 5. Because no matter how much they want to look for five legs on the cat, that is what took the network to Maspalomas. And it is that although it seems that in Gran Canaria they had not realized, sex in the open air has been one of the themes of the summer. In the same center of Barcelona similar images have been captured, as in many Spanish beaches, whose names the audience probably does not even remember.
