A policy based on false promises and the selective offering of guarantees, to gather economic support, falsifying the concept of "general interest" cannot be allowed to perpetuate for four years.
It is not a problem that an electoral system provides for elections every four years for this fact, what is a real problem is that in the intermediate spaces between elections, citizens are left defenseless, ignored, and elected politicians legally protected and shielded from almost any situation.
In the current legislation in this country, lack of ethics or morals is not a crime. Therefore, any elected politician or party can act in a way totally contrary to what they promised in elections, even having left their proposal in writing. However, political crimes recognized as such also do not have the power to dismiss the accused, where we see another typical lack of ethics or morals among our leaders, who have proven to be capable of leaving our institutions in handcuffs, clinging to the powers granted by the People until the end.
The political reality we are experiencing makes it essential for the people to have the opportunity to express themselves and even be empowered with the ability to revoke the mandate of an elected politician, since their decisions will continue to affect them. Furthermore, this society needs to recover moral values that are being lost, starting with the actions of those who should be exemplary citizens: elected politicians.
The current situation not only plagues politics with corruption and non-compliance, but also produces a situation of defenselessness for citizens, increased by themselves due to the fatigue produced by the lack of ethics in the political class, which ultimately translates into high electoral abstention and, therefore, more defenselessness and more "carte blanche" for those who live off electoral politics, who will continue to falsify programs and act for personal benefit with impunity, shielded behind legislation that seems designed to protect "popular representation" at all costs.
A people cannot be accused of little participation when they are deprived of basic powers to feel part of the politics of their country. Revocation is an electoral procedure by which voters can remove an elected official from their position. It is a fundamental piece in a worthy electoral legislation, where all public positions should be revocable.
There are many countries that contemplate this possibility in their legislation. This is carried out by combining elements of a process of Popular Initiative and a normal process of electing a candidate. The Revocation Referendum would begin by presenting a motion of revocation to the corresponding administration or directly by Popular Initiative. It would also be necessary to gather a certain number of signatures supporting the revocation measure. Normally, the number of signatures required will be a proportion of the votes cast in the last ordinary election for the position of the official who is the object of the revocation. And finally, if the revocation petition acquires a sufficient number of valid signatures, the revocation is put to a referendum and, if it is finally processed, the official is replaced by the form that is legislated for the case.
This method will not stop the corrupt from being corrupt. But at least, with this important element of electoral legislation, they will not hide behind immunities and special conditions that demonstrate that the Law is not the same for all people. Furthermore, the People need to reconquer social, ethical and moral values, which although some may think it is better to remove from our memory or distance from politics, we need them so that politics truly leads us towards a better world.
