Since the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) began providing data on deaths on Spanish roads in 1998, the figure has decreased significantly with some variations. Every year, awareness campaigns are repeated or even increased, seeking to make people aware of the consequences of some reckless acts behind the wheel. And it is that, in a matter of seconds, the slightest distraction can change your life forever.
The Spanish Socialist Workers' Party, from the Ministry of the Interior, has promoted several changes in traffic regulations, reaffirming our commitment to citizens to make roads safer and reduce the number of deaths on them. Although the data has improved, we are still far from the final goal.
More than a thousand people died last year in traffic accidents
Vehicles will not be able to exceed the speed limit by 20km/h to overtake on conventional roads. In addition, scooters will be prohibited from circulating on sidewalks and pedestrian areas after their regulation in the Royal Decree. Reckless acts such as using a mobile phone while driving will be punished with 6 points instead of 3. All these changes and the rest will be published in the BOE from January 2, 2021.
More than a thousand people died last year in traffic accidents, 20% due to improper use of mobile phones. These imprudence cause fatal accidents and, in other cases, consequences that mark for life. It is not a question of penalizing or hardening the measures further, but that these changes allow us to make people more aware of the risks when we are on the road. It is not about taking away 3 or 6 points from the license, because it goes beyond that. We are talking about the consequences that we can all avoid and that, once time passes, those sanction points end up becoming points of life.
