Catalonia is a part of Spain and every square meter of Spain belongs to all Spaniards, so Catalonia belongs to all Spaniards, as does any other part of Spain. This irrefutable axiom may be more or less pleasing to Spaniards residing in Catalonia or to a part of them, but in the hypothetical case that a majority disliked it*, that would not invalidate the axiom itself. Moreover, even if the rejection of the axiom were shared by all Spaniards residing in Catalonia, called Catalans, that would not be enough to modify said axiom. Therefore, the remote theoretical possibility that a part of Spain could separate would be decided by each and every Spaniard. To deny this is to deny democracy and to place oneself fully in totalitarian territory.
The law must be obeyed, and whoever does not obey it, commits a crime. In Catalonia there is a basic institutional law, which governs the organization of that part of Spain, called the Statute of Autonomy, which was approved by means of an organic law in the Congress of Deputies, as provided for in the Spanish Constitution. And it is the Constitution of Spain, the Magna Carta, that marks the path of Catalonia. If part or none of this was liked, it could undoubtedly be changed since we live in a democracy, and it could be changed as much as desired as long as the changes adhered to what the law itself dictates.
That you don't want Catalonia to continue being Spain? Change it. But change it without violating either the Statute of Autonomy or the Constitution of Spain. Change it with the representative participation of all Spaniards in the Congress and the Senate with the specific majorities that the Constitution marks, and change it with the direct participation also of all Spaniards through the mandatory referendum that the Magna Carta also clearly establishes. As long as the circumstances to change do not exist, assume the law and severely punish those who trample it.
The Supreme Court has ruled with respect to some criminal Catalan politicians and, in response, some Catalan politicians have encouraged a part of the Spaniards residing in Catalonia to demonstrate against the Supreme Court's ruling. The spiral of protests generated is being fueled by separatist demands and anti-system aspirations. The conviction for sedition has given birth to a rebellion that, like a headless chicken, advances towards chaos, violent anarchy and the social and economic destruction of Catalonia.
A democracy must defend itself from those who intend to blow it up. The separatists and their absolute denial of the law, or their permanent embrace of crime, try to achieve independence by blowing up the Statute of Autonomy and the Spanish Constitution. This is how the theoretical sovereignists and the separatist politicians act, because the clumsy demonstrators pushed by them act, in the best of cases, by crushing the rights of those who reject all this nonsense: preventing them from exercising the right to work, the right to health care and the right to attend class, among many others. Because in the worst case, the puppets in demonstrator disguise are assimilating Catalonia to a war zone.
I am writing this article in the mid-afternoon of Friday, October 18, hours before thousands of brainless people arrive in Barcelona who have collapsed the most important roads in Catalonia. The simple fact that these people have violated the rights of millions of Catalans to work freely, to attend schools, institutes and faculties, to go to hospitals and health centers or to transit peacefully from one place to another already deserves the label of rabble. Yes, RABBLE. Although, sadly, things are not going to end there, because in the late afternoon and when night falls Barcelona is going to look like Syria.
This terrible reality is unacceptable. It is unacceptable that those who demand to violate the law take over such an important part of Spain, without putting a stop to it. The Army should have been deployed in Catalonia and prevented the collapse of its main roads, even if the collapse has been peaceful, until this moment and only in appearance. Also the Executive and Legislative Powers should have applied article 155 of the Constitution and dissolved the Parliament of Catalonia and the Generalitat, as well as having taken absolute control of the Mozos de Escuadra with the preventive substitution of all the superior and intermediate commands by commands of the Civil Guard or of the own Army. Of course, also under the protection of 155, the broadcast of TV3 should have been blacked out and the state of exception decreed. The Legislative Power should have ordered the detention of the Catalan politicians who are outside the law and who incite to be increasingly outside of it a long time ago.
I hope I am wrong, but I predict that next Monday 21, both the president of the government of Spain in office and the head of state will regret having continued with the same fallen arms they have had until now, while Catalonia burns and the Spaniards who reside there, die.
*Note: according to the CEO (Center for Opinion Studies of the Generalitat of Catalonia) in a survey on Friday 26-7-2019, separatism has a support of 44% while rejection is 48.3%. In any case, I refer to the title of this article: "Even if it were 100%"
