When Dolores Corujo assumed the presidency of the Cabildo in June 2019, she stated that she "came to dignify the institution", as if the institution were unworthy, and "the exercise of politics", which certainly has much to dignify, and no one knows better than she and Carlos Espino.
On the way to three years of mandate, Corujo's obsession with a server, her scorched earth policy and the permanent false revision of the past, remain the priority on her political agenda.
Meanwhile, after beheading without the slightest consideration and by mistaken sectarianism about fifteen Heads of Service, the Cabildo and Lanzarote continue without an island project and turning their backs on the sustainable strategy approved by the Council of the Biosphere Reserve. Without taking a single step for a new Island Plan, without plans to combat the highest youth unemployment in Europe, without starting the new residence for the elderly awarded, without starting the construction of any of the public housing announced a thousand times, being the last to grant meager aid for the pandemic, without any agricultural or energy policy, privatizing dependency services that work well, and without so many other things.
Of course, they have an enormous propaganda apparatus, although in reality it does not present a single notable project in the mandate.
The raison d'être of the obsessions of the formal president, and the in pectore, Carlos Espino, is none other than the latest election results.
Because, when despite the enormous national socialist wave and multiple tricks of then-buried political defection, the PSOE obtained an electoral victory by the minimum difference over the Canarian Coalition, which was again rewarded despite the foreseeable wear and tear of ten years of government subjected to perverse attacks by land, sea and air; Corujo already foresaw from the polls that CC would beat its own absolute record of votes in the last elections of 2019 to the Cabildo of Lanzarote, as it was; we grew by 20% increasing by 2,500 votes the results obtained when we had won them in 2015.
Corujo also knew that CC would win the elections to the Cabildo in four of the seven municipalities of Lanzarote, sweeping in the capital, and of course in La Graciosa, as it happened.
That is why Corujo and Espino knew that the favorable national socialist wave would not be enough, and prior to the elections, they devised their particular "apology for defection", lavishing multiple offers to leaders of other parties in exchange for supporting the PSOE by betraying their own acronyms.
He offered a position to the then councilor and visible face of Ciudadanos, Benjamín Perdomo, and both complied: Ciudadanos disappeared from the Cabildo as a party and today Benjamín is a councilor of the CACT.
He offered a position to the then councilor of Somos in San Bartolomé and apparent candidate of this formation to the Cabildo, Paula Corujo, and both complied: Somos disappeared from the Cabildo as a party and today Paula is a non-elected councilor.
To the then councilor and leader of Podemos, Carlos Meca, who knows what they offered him so that during the campaign he publicly attacked his own political organization and supported Corujo's candidacy, but he certainly did.
He promised the Municipal Platform of Haría of Pepe Torres the mayoralty in exchange for their votes to the PSOE, but here only the PMH complied by contributing its 600 votes, although this case cannot be assimilated to the defection of the previous ones.
But despite all that external support and the national wind in favor, the victory of the PSOE was by just 160 votes over a reinforced CC that improved citizen confidence, and Dolores Corujo, knowing that the favorable wind would change, began to be terrified by the idea that she could not even overcome the first revalidation in 2023, or what would be worse, the catastrophe of not finishing the mandate. That is why she had to shield herself in the presidency, even if it meant elevating her apology for defection to the category of crime.
First, they agreed with Podemos in Tías, handcuffing their "opposition" councilor in the Cabildo, Jorge Peñas, whom they appointed advisor to the town hall. But they needed one more elected councilor to defect, to add to an alternative pact to the one signed with the Popular Party, which would avoid the arithmetic possibility of a censure. Thus, Corujo and Espino induced the most scandalous case of defection experienced in the Canary Islands, as accomplices and cover-ups of the fact that a councilor ruled "not attached" by the secretary of the corporation, that is, an official defector, has been collecting for two years from public coffers without being entitled to it and without attending his medical consultation in the midst of a pandemic.
Finally, the incorporation of Podemos to this pro-defection government, after publicly perjuring and guaranteeing its spokesman in the Cabildo that "they would never govern with the defector of Sosa", to now hide in the fact that their pact is only with the PSOE, cannot be more insulting to the most elementary common sense. Of firecrackers.
Thus and with everything, for the good of Lanzarote, hopefully this pact will serve for something. For our part, we will continue to propose from the opposition, but if this apology for defection is what Dolores Corujo was referring to when she said that she came to dignify the institution and the exercise of politics, let the citizens judge her in 2023.
