In contemporary political debate, the term "nationalism" has frequently been associated with divisions, conflicts, and exclusionary positions. However, I propose a redefinition of this ideology, adapted to the demands of an interconnected and constantly changing world.
The new nationalism should not be understood as a rejection of globalization, but as an affirmation of collective identity that promotes collaboration between peoples. However, this collaboration must be limited to practices that do not harm people or the environment, among other things. Instead of being based on ideas of superiority or isolation, this vision focuses on the protection and appreciation of cultural diversity, recognizing that each territory has something unique to contribute to the global landscape. This does not mean passively accepting any influence, but critically evaluating how each interaction can benefit local communities and strengthen social cohesion.
In the case of the Canary Islands, nationalism is an essential tool to improve the lives of people residing on the islands, acting as a shield against external political non-compliance. This approach seeks to ensure that decisions affecting the region respect its cultural, social, and economic particularities, always prioritizing the well-being of its inhabitants. Furthermore, all progress driven under this perspective will make our neighborhood coexistence more prosperous and strengthen the economic sustainability of the Canary Islands. The richness of the island traditions, combined with a strategic openness to external ideas, can build a unique model of prosperity and balance.
Inclusive nationalism: a necessary alternative
This concept of "inclusive nationalism" recognizes that national identity is not at odds with inclusion and respect for other cultures. In fact, it thrives on them. In this model, public policies would be oriented towards strengthening the internal social and economic fabric without falling into polarizing discourses. Cooperation, instead of being seen as a threat, would be an opportunity to learn and grow together.
Every external contribution should be seen as an opportunity to enrich and improve the society we share. This approach allows for constant evolution, integrating the best of foreign influences while preserving one's own cultural roots. In the Canary Islands, this translates into initiatives that not only respect but also amplify the cultural heritage of the islands, from folk music to gastronomy and art.
Inclusive nationalism must be based on clear pillars that integrate sustainability, culture, heritage, customs, and an improved identity. That is, it not only seeks to preserve what is one's own but to enrich it through responsible practices open to positive change. This model should include the active participation of civil society, from local farmers to artists and entrepreneurs, creating a strong and resilient social fabric.
Fundamental principles of the new nationalism
Identity and diversity in the Canary Islands imply protecting local traditions while integrating global influences to strengthen culture and economy. Responsible sovereignty prioritizes regional well-being, managing resources fairly without disconnecting from global commitments. As a bridge between continents, the Canary Islands promote international cooperation and solutions to global problems. Education promotes global citizenship, connecting local identity with the rest of the world. Sustainability and innovation drive economic and social practices that respect the environment, ensuring a prosperous and balanced future.
This new nationalism should not seek to retreat within borders but use them as starting points for dialogue and cooperation. By redefining this ideology, we can move towards a world where national pride and international solidarity coexist, contributing to the progress of all equally. In the context of the Canary Islands, this approach will allow the islands to stand out as an example of harmonious coexistence, economic resilience, and mutual respect, laying the foundations for a prosperous and sustainable future.
