The Canary Islands Institute of Equality (ICI) is launching, together with the Tías City Council, a program of training courses aimed at all audiences with the aim of raising awareness among the population about the fight against gender violence. The initiative, which is part of the Tías-Mask 19 project that began last year, will start on October 25 and 26, with several modules focused on raising awareness against mistreatment, abuse and sexist attacks.

The learning talks are part of a broader program, the result of the collaboration agreement signed between the Canary Islands Institute of Equality and the Tías City Council, which will be developed throughout the last quarter of the year and which will be reported soon. Specifically, these training courses aimed at the general public will be taught by professionals specialized in four different areas. They will provide information and knowledge to participants in the area of prevention of gender violence and the construction of egalitarian non-violent relationships between women and men.

The first training will begin on October 25th and 26th, at the Conecta Tías Civic Center, in Puerto del Carmen, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. This first contact will focus on awakening reflection on the perception of gender violence, in order to achieve "an impulse in raising awareness of the problem, as well as the detection of sexist and symbolic structures." In addition, tools will be presented to improve the capacity for action and transformation.

Understanding how gender violence develops, its roots and foundations, will be the second step in this program. Attendees will be able to become aware of the situation and needs of the victims. "This will encourage a degree of involvement in the victims' environment and generate strategic alliances between technical personnel and social groups," they say from the Council. In addition, the resources that are needed to be prepared will be learned, and know how to act, in cases of people affected by gender violence.

Love and masculinity

On the other hand, we invite you to reflect together on the importance of self-care and self-love in the face of the impact of love. "Learning to love ourselves from the inside out" will be the core in the third teaching space. The workshop will be carried out to promote healthy relationships, focusing on the prevention of sexist violence.

Finally, a fourth reflective training will be given, focusing on the male figure. "Understanding how men learn to be men, how they learn to relate to each other and to women. How they exercise patriarchy and, consequently, make women suffer will be a turning point, to end up discovering how they can free themselves, and be able to build a new masculinity from the Loving Ethics and the Philosophy of Care."

In the words of the mayor of Tías, José Juan Cruz Saavedra, “the population is a key factor for the prevention of gender violence and the protection of victims.” "In our municipality we condemn sexists and abusers. Our best resource to anticipate them is the union and training of the entire citizenry,” he says.

"This initiative does nothing more than reinforce our commitment to the fight against gender violence," adds the Councilor for Equality of the Tías City Council, Nicolás Saavedra. "We understand the need to involve all citizens and we know that the key is to raise awareness and train from an early age to the adult population. For this, we have prepared a series of activities together with the Canary Islands Institute of Equality that we will soon be able to present,” he explains.
