Postal voting for the upcoming general elections on July 23 can now be requested at any Post Office branch, once the call for elections was published in the BOE this past Tuesday. In the recent regional and municipal elections on May 28, more than 984,000 citizens chose this option to cast their vote, 6.4% more than in the previous elections in 2019.

It is expected that this percentage will increase even more in view of the upcoming general elections, as it will be the first to be held in summer.

Deadline to apply for postal vote and deposit it: until July 13 and July 19

The last day to apply for postal vote throughout Spain will be July 13. It can be done online or in person with the national identity document and must be sent by certified mail, but no later than July 19.

How to vote by mail throughout Spain

The application form can be downloaded from the website of the Ministry of the Interior and submitted electronically on the Post Office website or in person at an office. A few days later, the interested party will receive at home an envelope with the ballots of each political formation, the certificate of registration in the census and another envelope with the address of the polling station where he/she is to vote.

Once the ballot has been chosen and placed in the corresponding envelope, it will be closed and placed in the other envelope addressed to the Electoral Board, which will also include the certificate of registration in the census. Once the vote has been sent, the voter can no longer vote in person.

For Spaniards living abroad

For Spaniards residing abroad, the Electoral Census Office sends them all the documentation ex officio and for the first time the ballots can also be downloaded electronically.

In addition, if voting by certified mail, the resident abroad must introduce the corresponding ballot inside the voting envelope and include it in the other envelope addressed to the Provincial Electoral Board, which will also include one of the certificates of registration in the census, a photocopy of the passport or ID card or a certificate of nationality, among other documentation.

If they wish to vote in person, they can also deposit their vote in the ballot boxes set up in their embassies, consulates or authorized centers until July 20.
