The Yaiza City Council has decided, and so it was confirmed in the last plenary session, to adjust the criteria for granting sports subsidies to the situation derived from Covid-19, "a crisis that has forced the activity of schools and clubs linked to them and competitions of different disciplines and categories to stop and resume again and again, especially harming contact sports such as Canarian wrestling, which has not even been able to start training."

“We have approved 120,000 euros to subsidize sports schools plus an extra 22,000 euros, of which 12,000 euros are destined for deeply rooted sports such as Latin sailing and 10,000 euros that we reserve for individual athletes,” said the mayor, Óscar Noda.

For his part, the Councilor for Sports of Yaiza, Ángel Lago, has explained the scales established for granting aid, “considering above all the number of students enrolled in each of the sports schools and the qualifications of their monitors, since we wish to promote and reward clubs that care about better preparing their coaches, training that ultimately results in the sports and personal development of our boys and girls.”

Within the technical evaluation for granting aid, Yaiza grants 60 percent of the total to sports entities with the highest number of practitioners and 15 percent to those who accredit the qualifications of their monitors. Likewise, the evaluation includes 5 percent for high-cost sports, another 5 for disciplines that promote equality and 5 more for native sports.

The subsidy of 120,000 euros will be distributed in three quarters, reviewing all the evaluation criteria in each quarter, except for the number of students, which is subject to a monthly evaluation. “There is still a lot of uncertainty in all sectors, and since sport is no stranger to this pandemic scenario, we decided to adapt the administrative reality to the sporting reality, trying to be as objective and fair as possible under technical criteria,” concludes the Councilor for Sports of Yaiza.
