Various groups denounce that the demands of PP and CC to Zapatero "attack the basic rights of irregular immigrants"

CEAR-Canarias, the Senegalese Association Feder, the Federation of African Associations, the Union of Associations of Non-Community Foreigners or the Canary Association of Alternative Economy are some of the twenty groups and individuals who sign a statement denouncing the demands contained in the government pact between the Canarian Coalition (CC) and the Popular Party (PP) to the Zapatero Government.

According to these groups, they "directly attack the fundamental rights of people, the Law on the Protection of Minors and against the Spanish Constitution itself and try to deprive immigrants of basic rights such as health, freedom and education," they say.

These people believe that the statements by Larry Alvarez (PP) and José Miguel Barragán (CC) at the end of the meeting held on June 21, aimed at toughening legislation on immigration, "will drastically worsen" the situation of immigrants in the Canary Islands.

Specifically, both formations agreed to increase the number of days of detention for undocumented immigrants, increasing it from 40 to 70 days. To hinder the registration of undocumented immigrants, "which will prevent their access to basic services" and to consider foreign minors as undocumented immigrants, "in order to repatriate them without taking into account their basic rights," they add.

For all these reasons, they consider that the statements of both political leaders "reveal contempt for Spanish and international law" and "violate internationally recognized basic rights."
