The Tías City Council celebrated World Environment Day and World Oceans Day with a cleaning day held this Saturday on the municipality's beaches, which had great citizen participation. Thanks to the joint effort of volunteers and collaborating entities, a total of 65 kilograms of packaging and around 4,000 cigarette butts were collected, thus preventing these residues from ending up in the sea and affecting its biodiversity.
Around 40 people gathered on Saturday morning in the Plaza del Varadero, Puerto del Carmen, near the Poril area, to receive basic information and material from the team of the municipal strategy ZEConsciente, organizer of the event. The Libera project, united against littering, SEOBirdlife, Ecoembes, Agenda Urbana, Fariones Plus Hotel&Apartaments and Volunteer Firefighters Boluntis Tías collaborated in this initiative.
The mayor of Tías, José Juan Cruz, and the Councilor for the Environment, Carmen Gloria Rodríguez, expressed their special gratitude, on behalf of the City Council, to the staff of the Fariones Plus Hotel & Apartments, for actively joining this initiative.
"The involvement of the private tourism sector is essential to preserve our beaches, and actions like this demonstrate a clear commitment by those who work every day to offer the best in a clean and sustainable environment," Cruz declared.
Likewise, Rodríguez wanted to extend that special thanks to the volunteers of Boluntis Tías, "who, one more year, have enthusiastically joined this activity. It is especially gratifying to see how young people get involved and demonstrate a firm environmental awareness, willing to protect our seas and our natural environment."
This day is part of the ZEConsciente strategy, promoted by the Tías City Council under the management of the environmental disseminator Cristina Camacho with the collaboration of the Environment, Tourism and Culture councils. In addition to raising awareness about the environmental values of the Cagafrecho Special Conservation Zone, included in the Natura 2000 Network, the need to not generate waste or leave it in the natural environment is disseminated.
