The Lanzarote Island Water Consortium will allocate 150,000 euros in subsidies to water consumers in the primary sector.

The Official Bulletin of the Province of Las Palmas (BOP) published the announcement of the call for these aids last Wednesday, February 28, and interested farmers, ranchers, and fishermen's associations have until March 14 to submit their applications.

The president of the Lanzarote Council and the Water Consortium, Oswaldo Betancort, emphasizes "the importance of these aids for the island's primary sector, considering that one of the main problems it suffers from is the lack of water." Thus, the president adds that "we are going to continue supporting our farmers, ranchers, and fishermen because they are a key piece for the future of the island."

It should be remembered that the primary sector of the islands of Lanzarote and La Graciosa uses water from desalination to attend to their tasks. For this reason, these aids and discounts have been established so that the water bill can be affordable for the sector.

Beneficiaries and requirements

The beneficiaries of these aids, which correspond to the 2023 financial year, are those natural or legal persons who have a policy for a potable agricultural water meter contracted for the case of farmers and ranchers and an industrial water meter for the case of fishermen's associations, producer organizations, federations, and sea cooperatives with the company Canal Gestión Lanzarote and are paying users.

Among the requirements that beneficiaries must meet, it should be noted that, in the case of farmers, they must be registered as users and payers on the invoice to which the subsidy is to be passed on, while for fishermen's associations, consumption must be for fishing extraction activity and its commercialization.

In this way, people attached to the agricultural regime go from 0.98 euros/m3 of water to 0.50 euros/m3, while those not attached to the agricultural regime go from 1.12 euros/m3 to 0.80 euros/m3 of water in the 2023 financial year. Fishermen's associations, producer organizations, federations, and sea cooperatives are applied a reduction of 0.48 euros m3 in water consumption destined for fishing extraction activity and its commercialization last year.

Submission of applications

Those interested may submit their applications electronically through the link, or in the entry register of the company Canal Gestión Lanzarote, SAU, located on the Arrecife - Las Caletas road, Km 3.5, before March 13.

Likewise, the technicians of the Experimental Agricultural Farm of the Cabildo of Lanzarote and other associations of the primary sector, such as Sat El Jable, Aprolan or ADS Lanzarote, are also collaborating with farmers and ranchers in the processing of these aids.
