The Socialist Group in the Yaiza City Council has presented a motion to the Municipal Plenary to promote the implementation of the school canteen service in all public educational centers in the municipality that currently lack this resource. The initiative, defended by the socialist spokesperson Carmen Guadalupe, proposes that the City Council initiate the necessary procedures with the Ministry of Education of the Government of the Canary Islands to guarantee that CEIP Uga, CEIP Las Breñas and CEIP Mararía have a school canteen from the 2025/2026 academic year.

“The right to adequate food is essential for the development of our children, but also to help families reconcile their work and family life. We cannot continue to allow centers without a school canteen to exist in Yaiza, because that generates inequalities among our students and an additional burden for many mothers and fathers who do not have viable or economically accessible alternatives,” explained Carmen Guadalupe.

The socialist motion proposes that the City Council formalize the necessary procedures for the implementation of the school canteen in CEIP Uga, and that it urge the Ministry of Education to include this service in the CEIP Las Breñas and CEIP Mararía unitary schools. In addition, it is requested that the Government of the Canary Islands prioritize this need in its educational planning so that the service is operational from the next school year.

“The school canteen is not a luxury, it is a necessity. It is health, it is equality and it is also reconciliation. In other municipalities much progress has already been made in this matter, and Yaiza cannot be left behind. The families of the south deserve the same commitment to public education as the rest of the island,” added Guadalupe.

The PSOE of Yaiza insists that this measure "would have an immediate positive impact, not only for the well-being of the students, but also to advance in equity and social justice in the educational field". “It is time for the institutions to act with responsibility and sensitivity, and stop looking the other way when we talk about basic children's rights,” concluded the socialist spokesperson.
