The Socialist Group in the Cabildo of Lanzarote, through its spokesperson, Ariagona González, will defend in the next plenary session a motion to condemn the inactivity of the Insular Water Consortium in the face of the serious situation of the integral water cycle on the island.
“The lack of transparency and effective management by the Water Consortium is a reflection of the negligence of Oswaldo Betancort's government. Meanwhile, the most vulnerable families and economic sectors of Lanzarote, such as farmers, continue to suffer constant water cuts that worsen the quality of life on the island,” said Ariagona González.
The socialist spokesperson also denounced that it is unjustifiable that despite having firm judicial resolutions that support actions against Canal Gestión Lanzarote for contractual breaches. “Oswaldo Betancort has chosen not to execute the measures of the Emergency Action Plan, valued at 90 million euros. We have been without concrete progress for more than fifteen months while the situation worsens day after day,” González criticized.
The PSOE will demand the realization and immediate publication of the technical and legal reports necessary to take measures against Canal Gestión Lanzarote.
“The water situation in Lanzarote cannot wait any longer. We need a Consortium that acts with responsibility and transparency, prioritizing the well-being of citizens and not the interests of a few,” concluded Ariagona González.
In the next plenary session, the socialists will also formulate a question that seeks to clarify the conditions in which the portable desalination plants sent from La Palma more than a year ago are located and whose effectiveness remains an unknown.
“At the beginning of this term, in August 2023, the Consortium received two portable desalination plants to guarantee the water supply on the island. However, since their arrival, little or nothing is known about their real operation. We want to know how many days they have been operational, how many cubic meters of water they have produced, what have been the expenses associated with their start-up, operation and maintenance, and which body has assumed them,” González pointed out.
“We are not going to give up. We will continue defending the quality of an essential asset and therefore the rights of the people of Lanzarote against a management that has abandoned the population to their fate in one of the biggest water crises that the island has suffered,” concluded the socialist spokesperson.
