The Playa Blanca Business Association (ASEMCOM) has once again demanded a Civil Guard post in the tourist town, after the agents left the premises in February that had been ceded by businessman Juan Francisco Rosa in 2006. Although the Yaiza City Council assured that it was going to offer the Civil Guard one of the premises of the Playa Blanca Bus Station, it seems that "they have not yet agreed on deadlines or the location."
This was stated by the president of ASEMCOM, José Luis Delgado, who held a meeting with the general secretary of the Government Delegate in the Canary Islands, Vicente Redondo, to convey his concern about the lack of a Civil Guard post in Playa Blanca. At this meeting, the Delegation did not provide a solution to this problem. "We still don't know what's going to happen," Delgado said on Radio Lanzarote-Onda Cero.
"The nearest police station is in Yaiza, although 76 percent of the municipality's population lives in Playa Blanca. People have to travel 20 kilometers there and 20 kilometers back to file a complaint. There is also no bus from Playa Blanca to anywhere after 11:00 p.m. I think it is basic to have a post here," he defended, while saying that if it is not resolved by June, "the association will have to take action." "Maybe we have to find a place and have the association worry about the Civil Guard being in Playa Blanca," he said.
José Luis Delgado has warned that "many thefts and robberies" occur in Playa Blanca. "Two weeks ago, there were 15 robberies in villas, in private homes. I have evidence that in two of them the residents were inside. Sometimes it is better not to appear in the press so that no one gets scared, but the reality is what it is and we must be aware of it," he said.
ASEMCOM now occupies the Civil Guard premises
Coincidentally, ASEMCOM now occupies the premises that the Civil Guard left in February and that had been ceded by Juan Francisco Rosa. "Now we are occupying the Civil Guard premises, which paid only one euro for it and we obviously have to pay normal," he said.
José Luis Delgado has assured that "there are still people who come to the ASEMCOM premises thinking that it is still the Playa Blanca Civil Guard". "There are people who still haven't realized that we no longer have that fixed post," he said.
On the other hand, the president of ASEMCOM has also complained that in Playa Blanca "the pharmacy closes every other Sunday" and tourists and residents have to travel to Yaiza. "We are giving a very sad image, luckily no one finds out, that people are on vacation. But then you talk to people and they can't believe that they don't have a pharmacy every other Sunday," he criticized.
