The Council of the Biosphere Reserve approves the new zoning and discusses the situation of fish farms in its last session

A session in which "the appointment of Beatriz González as a new member of the Scientific Cabinet" and the recognition of the Custodia del Territorio Papacría association were agreed upon.

The Council of the Biosphere Reserve of Lanzarote held its last ordinary session of the current legislature last Tuesday. A meeting that took place at the Sociedad Democracia de Arrecife and in which various issues were discussed, according to the Cabildo.

"The responsibility to defend our territory, our environment and the people who inhabit it"

"Today we have to celebrate the last Council of the Biosphere Reserve of this mandate," began the councilor of the area, Nicolás Saavedra, also recalling that "in 2023, Lanzarote celebrates 30 years as a Biosphere Reserve", a UNESCO recognition that entails the responsibility to "defend our territory, our environment and the people who inhabit it."

Saavedra also highlighted "the importance of this advisory body having served and continuing to serve" to promote "a calm debate that awakens in the island's society the interest in continuing to build spaces for a more participatory democracy."

Firstly, "the provisional approval of the proposal for the new zoning of the Biosphere Reserve of Lanzarote to adapt it to the statutory framework of UNESCO" was carried out, they add. Also, "the appointment of Beatriz González López-Valcárcel as a new member of the Scientific Cabinet has been agreed." Awarded with the Cross of Civil Merit of Health in 2011, her main research interest is Health Economics, having worked as an international consultant in countries such as Mexico, Brazil, Costa Rica, Chile, Uruguay and Mozambique.

"The situation of fish farms and mobility in Lanzarote and its relationship with European policies have been other issues discussed", for which there has also been the presence of "Fernando Espino, technician of the Environmental Impact Service of the General Directorate of the Fight against Climate Change and Environment of the Government of the Canary Islands; and Alfonso Sanz, geographer, who has worked as a consultant in about thirty Spanish cities", they emphasize from the Council.

"The diploma of recognition for environmental work has been awarded"

At the end of the session, "the Lanzarote association Custodia del Territorio Papacría was presented with the diploma of recognition for environmental work", an award that the Spanish Network of Biosphere Reserves granted last December "for its contribution to awareness, cooperation and citizen participation in the defense of environmental heritage", they acknowledge.
